| DESCRIPTION |
|
scapigerous herb with globose, tunicated, fleshy, underground bulb 5-10 cm in diametr; odour characetristic. Leaves sub-distichous, 30-60 cm long, fistular, acute, glucous-green. Flowers greenish-white, numerous in globose umbels 3-10 cm in diameter.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bulb : The fresh onion consists of a pear shaped tunicated bulb, bearing fibrous roots at its base and the aerial parts consist of tuft of leaves which bears succulent stem bearing umbel. The bulb consists of a compressed stem at the base covered on the upper side by fleshy scaly leaves which on the extreme outside is covered by dry membranous scales. The outer scales are papery, light pinkish, the inner fleshy scales are pinkish-white in colour. Odour strong, pungent and characteristic. Microscopically the epidermis consists of axially elongated, polygonal, tubular cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to the Middle Asiatic countries in the region of Iran and Pakistan, and is in cultivation from pre-historic times. The near East Asiatic and the Mediterranean regions are considered to be the secondary centres of origin. This species is cultivated in India since ancient times and its existence in the wild form is doubtful.
