| DESCRIPTION |
|
An erect, viscidly hairy, foetid, annual or biennial herb, 30-150 cm high. Leaves radical and cauline, sinuate-dentate or pinnatifid. Flowers bisexual, regular, pale yellowish-green or yellowish-white with dark purplein the center.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Commercial henbane consists of wrinkled, matted and broken leaves mixed with stem, flowering and fruiting tops. Leaves are ovate-lanceolate, 20 - 30 cm long and 7 - 10 cm wide with a broad, flat, 5 cm long petiole. Lamina is coarsely dentate to pinnately lobed, acute apex, with acute triangular lobes. Texture glandular hairy. Midrib wide, hairy, flat with pinnate venation. Stem hollow, wrinkled and hairy. Odour strong and characteristic. Taste bitter and slightly acrid.

|
This species is globally distributed from North America to South West China. Within India, it has been recorded in Western Himalayan region of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in an altitude range of 2100-3300 metres

|
The plant requires well drained, fertile, sandy loam os silt loam soils. Forest soil and waste lands rich in organic matter and free from weeds are also suitable
