| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small tree, upto 10 m tall; branches armed with paired, recurved prickles. Leaves pinnate, 20-38 cm long; pinnae 8-12 pairs, 10-15 cm long with small prickles at the base; leaflets 10-20 pairs per pinnae, subsessile, oblong, obliquely truncate.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Heartwood : It is orange yellow, heavy, fairly straight-grained and diffuse porous. The growth rings are demarcated by fine, interrupted lines of parenchymatous cells. The wood has a bitter taste, is colourless and shows a hard fracture. In T.S. the heartwood consists mostly of small xylem vessels.a few to moderately numerous, medium sized vessels are also present. Solitary prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate are found in paratracheal and zonate parenchyma but are absent in metatracheal ones. Fibres are long, septate, libriform to non-libriform and hexagonal.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found wild and as an escape in South India, West Bengal, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. It is cultivated in gardens.

|
The tree is cultivated in gardens for its large panicles of yellow flower. It I spropagated by seed and is quick growing.
