| DESCRIPTION |
|
A tall slender unbarnched palm upto 12-30 m high with crown of pinnate leaves. Stem annulate, leaves with numerous leaflets. Flowers in spadix; male flowers small, numerous, sessile; female much larger and few at the base of each ramification of the spadix, sessile.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seed is ovoid, externally pale reddish-brown to light yellowish-brown, marked with a network of paler lines, frequently with adhering portions of slivery brittle endocarp and adhering fibres of mesocarp at the base. It is hard with ruminate endosperm of brownish tissue alternating with whitish tissue; odour is characteristic; taste astringent. Transverse section of seed shows a seed coat consisting of several rows of cells, tangentially elongated, with inner walls more or less thickened; whitish cells of endosperm tissue with thick porous walls containing oil globules and aleurone grains.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This speices is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. It is cultivated in tropical America, Africa and India. Within India, it has been recorded Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, in the coastal regions, from Maharashtra to Kerala and Tamil Nadu and in the Deccan Plateau and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is also cultivated in the areas of its occurrence for its nuts which are commercially important.

|
It requires moist tropical climate for luxuriant growth and is very sensitive to draft. It thrives best in heavy rainfall areas with good drainage. It can also be grown in drier areas.
