| DESCRIPTION |
|
An evergreen tree, upto 15 m high. Leaves thickly coricaceous, broadly oblong, obtuse, base rounded. Flowers small, greenish white, in axillary and terminal panicles.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The leaves are simple, alternate, thick, shining dark green when fresh; pale green when dried. Texture papery, taste bitter and odour indistinct. Transverse section of the petiole show a single layered epidermis covered externally by cuticle. Some of the epidermal cells elongate to form covering trichomes. The trichomes are long, uniseriate, 2-4 celled, lignified with pointed apex. The petiole sows a number of vascular bundles which are arranged in a ring, traversed by medullary rays. The vascular bundles are capped externally by a group of fibres, which are thick walled and lignified. The xylem is well developed and composed of pitted vessels and tracheids. Large parenchymatous cells constitute the pith. Numerous secretory canals which are mostly elliptical or circular in shape and schizogenous in nature are present in cortex and phloem.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is commonly found throughout the greater part in wet to dry deciduous forests, up to an altitude of 1200 metres and in the sub-Himalayan tract up to an altitude of 900 metres
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
It is propagated by seeds. The seeds lying on the ground exposed to the sun have low germination potential. However, the fresh seeds hve been found to have fertility of approx. 70 percent.
