| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial herbs, upto 1 m high, erect, aromatic. Leaves linear-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate. Panicles 13-15 cm long, oblong; spikes 1.5 - 3.0 cm long. Sessile spikelets about 4 mm long, eliptic-oblong or oblong, awned.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The leaves are long, 35 cm * 1.8 cm, linear-lanceolate, ligulate, glabrous beneath, partly sheathing the stem with cordate to sub-cordate base; odour aromatic. Important microscopic characters of the leaf are : abaxial epidermis possesses short cells mostly paired, but sometimes solitary between the veins, large cells generally with thin papillae; silica bodies over the veins are cross shaped or dumb-bell shaped, occassionally nodular; hairs 38-51 microns with basal cell being wider and more inflated than distal cell which tapers to an acutely pointed apex; stomata mostly possess low domw shaped subsidiary cells

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Tropics. Within India, it occurs in the drier localities of India, common in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and South India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
A well drained sandy loam soil havinf irrigation facilities and receiving rainfall of about 150 cm annually is an ideal condition for cultivation of palmarosa. It also grows on well drained clay loam soil, free from water-logging.
