| DESCRIPTION |
|
An annual, dichotomosuly branched, erect, leafy herb 30-45 cm high; root cylindrical, brownish. Leaves sessile3.2-7 cm * 3-6 mm, linear to linear-lanceolate, opposite, floral leaves broader at the base and shorter.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Small, 4-5 cm long, 0.5-2 mm thick, cylindrical, ribbed, gradually tapering, having a few secondary roots, pale brown; fracture short; odour and taste indistinct. Microscopically, young roots shows exfoliated, single layered epidermis. Mature root shows cork, composed of 10-12 layers of thin-walled rectangular cells; secondary cortex consists of 4-6 layers of oval, elliptical, parenchymatous cells; oval to elongated, elliptical, thick-walled, lignified cells with wide lumen. Groups of stone cells and a few fibres are present in this region.
Stem : Slender, glabrous, cylindrical, 1-3 mm thick, internode 1-1.5 cm long, light yellow; fracture short, odour and taste indistinct. Transvrse section of the stem shows a single layered epidermis compoed of thick-walled, flattened, tangenmtially elongated cells. Older stme shows 4-5 layers of cork composed of thin-walled, rectangular, tangentially elongated and radially arranged cells.
Leaf : 1.7-7 cm long, 0.2-0.8 cm wide, sessile, linear-lanceolate or linear oblong, sub acute, base rarely rounded or sub-cordate; greenish-yellow; odour and taste not distinct. Transverse section of midrib shows slightly convex outline; epidermis singl elayered, covered externally with thick, striated cuticle.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species native to Africa, globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it has naturalised, especially in the drier parts of Bengal and south India, and largely grown in hedges.
