| DESCRIPTION |
|
Prickly undershrub, 60 cm to 1.5 m high. Leaves elliptic, acuminate at both ends, entire, spine tipped. Flowers axillary, yellow, bracts foliacous.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The periderm of stem bark is subtended by 5 - 7 layers of tubular collenchyma cells. The phloem rays of stem are of heterogenous type with uniseriate and multiseriate rays, 8 - 16 and 8 - 25 cells high respectively and 2 - 3 cells broad. Granular and needle shaped calcium oxalate crystals, filing up many cells in almost all tissues of bark, are present . In root bark, yelllowish cork and sometimes a new phellogen layer separating outer and inner cortex and cells containing blackish brown contents are present. Some epidermal cells of leaf contain calcium carbonate crystals.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it is found throughout the hotter parts in ravines and shady habitats in deciduous forests. It is also commonly grown as a hedge plant in gardens.
