| DESCRIPTION |
|
An erect, simple or branched, silky hairy, annual herb or undershrub, 1-2m tall; stems triated. Leaves simple, linear to oblong-lanceolate, 4-15 * 0.7-4 cm brownish hairy on both sides. Flowers bright yellow, in lax racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seed : The seed I 0.5 - 0.7 * 0.3 - 0.4 cm, flat and compressed, reinform, olive-green to grey, glossy, mucilaginous. The testa is composed of palisade like macroscleroids, covered externally by smooth, thick cuticle, followed by a single layer of lignifie, flak shaped cells with intercellular spaces; the tissue beneath consisting of tangentially elongated, thin-walled crushed parenchymatous cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to India, even though it has never been found in a truly wild state, globally distributed from Indo-Malesia to Australia. Within India, it is cultivated nearly all over, frequently naturalised.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Sun hemp is a ahrdy species and grows on almost any soil but prefers a light, loamy, well drained soil for fibre development. It is generally grown as single crop when intended for fibre or for green manure, and as a mixed crop for seed.
