| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial herb or undershrub 0.5-1.0 m high. Leaves imparipinnately compound, leaflets 13-19, oblanceolate, obtuse, retuse or mucronate, base cuneate, strongly nerved. Flowers bisexual, bright rosy-purple or violet, in leaf opposed racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Tap roots about 8-15 cm long, 0.5-1.0 cm thick, cylindrical, outer surface pale yellowish-white with faint longitudinal striations and many transverse lenticels; fracture short and splintery; fresh root having characteristic odour and bitter, slightly tingling taste. The transverse section of mature root shows extrenal 6-10 layers of usual cork cells followed by 2-4 layers of phelloderm.
Stem : Woody, 0.5-1.5 cm thick, cylindrical, slightly angular near the apex; outer surface green and glabrous. Transverse section shows 8-13 layers of cork followed by 3-5 rows of phelloderm consisting of parenchymatous cells containing abundant starch grains.
Leaf : Green, petiolate, imparipinnately compoud having 13-19 leaflets, which are entire, oblanceolate, obtuse or retuse, mucronate 2-2.8 * 0.5-1.2 cm; glabrous on upper surface, pubescent on the lower surface, dried leaves curled, papery and brittle.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in the Pantropics. Within India, it is said to be found throughout upto an altitude of 1850 metres in the Himalayas, it is also sometimes cultivated.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It thrives well in sandy or loamy soils nd also grows in rocky areas. The herb is hardy and slow growing. The seeds do not germinate easily due to the waxy layer around the thick seed coat.
