| DESCRIPTION |
|
A large evergreen tree, branches drooping. Leaves pale green, imparipinnate, 3 to 5 foliolate; leaflets alternate, broadly ovate, cuneate, acuminate, ebntire. Flowers sessile or subsessile, yellow-white, in short, axillary panicles.

|
Globally the species is reported to be native of sub-Himalayan tract from Pakistan through Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, Sikkim, West Bengal, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. It is extensively planted throughout India including Southern Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is grown in Industrial belt, avenues, under overhead lines and canal bunds upto an altitude of 1500metres. This species is native to tropical Himalayas, globally distributed from Iraq to India. Within India, it is common in subhimalayan hills from Punjab to Assam, upto an altitude of 1500 metres. It is extensively planted throughout India and occasionally naturalised in the dry forests of interior Karnataka.

|
It grows on sandy alluvial, porous soil of sand, pebbles and boulders. It is also found on freshly exposed soil along roads and streams. It can grow on very poor soils. It prefers an annual arinfall between 760 to 2500 mm but able to withstand short period of drought.
