| DESCRIPTION |
|
An evergreen tree with a short trunk, upto 18 m in height and 1.5-1.8 m girth, branches penduclous. Brak reddish or reddish-brown, longitudinally fissured. Leaves distichous, linear, margins recurved, midrib prominent, dark green above, pale-brown or rusty below.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Leaf : Drug occurs as whole or broken leaf pieces, entire leaf flattened, linear with recurved margins, 1.3-4 * 0.1-0.3 cm, apex sharp pointed and prickly, entire, thick, brown above, but paler and rusty below, midrib prominent below; petiole very short; odour pleasant; taste acrid, bitter and disagrreable. Transverse section of lamina shows dorsiventral structure, margin slightly turned downward. Upper epidermis is single layered with thick striated cuticle. Lower epidermis is single layered with papillate projection. Sunken stomata are present only on lower surface, overhung by subsidiary cells. Palisade is two layered. Spongy parenchyma is 3-5 layered, thin walled, oval or irregular in shape, containing reddish-brown contents. Vascular bundle single, present in the midrib within an endodermis.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Distributed in temperate Hiamlyas between 2000- 3500 m in Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and in the hills of Khasia, Meghalya and Manipur at an altitude of 1500 m.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It can grow in very poor soils. It is highly susceptible to water logging and is best planned in slopy areas. The plants are susceptible to transfer shock and the transplantation is carried with minimum damage to roots.
