| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial herbs, 10-35 cm high; rootstock stout, short or elongate, cylindric, fleshy, leaves basal, sessile or narrowed into short or long petioles, linear-lancolate, membranous, plicate, base sheathing.
|

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Rootstock is stout, more or less cylindrical, upper portion clothed with the withered leaf bases and copious lateral roots which are long, whitish or yellowish grey. Externally the rootstock is yellowish brown. Fracture is starchy; taste slightly bitter and mucilaginous. Transverse section of rootstock shows 5-7 layered cork composed of rectangular cells. Cortex is wide containing vacuoles and secretory cells; some cells contain raphides or brown granular oily masses and starch grains. Afew rounded to tangentially elongated lysigenous cavities are present within the cortex.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed from Indo-Malesia to Australia. Within India, it has been recorded in Sub tropical Himalayas, eastwards to Assam and throughout the Western Ghats on marshy sides especially on lateritic soil.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Soil mixture consisting of euqal parts of loamy soil, well decayed manure and sand is favorable for its growth. Moderate watering and moist atmosphere is preferable
