| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial, creeping herbs. Stems semi-woody, climbing by short, adventitious roots. Leaves broadly ovate, slightly cordate, acuminate or acute, entire, glabrous, petiolate.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : T.S. of root shows outermost 6-8 layered cork followed by cortex composed of thin walled cells, mostly rounded to oblong and heavily loaded with starch grains. Scattered throughout the cortex are many secretory cells filled with light yellow coloured large globules. A few small thick walled cells, found singly or in groups of 2 or more, are also present. A complete ring of fairly thick walled cells, 1-3 layered, separates the cortex from phloem.
Leaf : Leaves coricaeous, 10-18 by 5-12.5 cm broadly ovate, acuminate, glabrous, 5 to 9 nerved, the suprabasal nerves usually alternate, base slightly cordate or usually rounded, more or less oblique; petioles 1.3-2.5 cm. microscopically leaf shows a dorsiventral structure. The cuticle is not striated, the hypodermis contains secretory cells, while the lower epidermis bears uni- to multicellular hairs and anisocytic stomata.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Malesia, cultivated widely. Within India, it is said to be cultivated in hot, damp localities.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It grows in tropical climate under shade. Sandy loam soil with adequate mositure retentive capacity is ideal. Soil must be fertile, deep and well drained.
