| DESCRIPTION |
|
Large, perennial twining herbs with milky juice. Leaves variable, ovate or oblong, subacute, mucronate, base cordate or truncate, petiolate. Flowers tubular, companulate, white, in few flowered cymes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root is cylindrical, elongated, usually unbranched and bears thin rootlets. The extrenal surface is light brown to yellowish grey in colour and shows deep longitudinal wrinkles or furrows which give it a rope like appearance. Fracture is short in the bark and fibrous in the wood. Taste is slightly acrid, nauseating. Transverse section of young root shows a single layer of epidermis, 3 - 4 layered cortex of polyhedral cells, a layer of endodermis and a layer of pericycle enclosing a tri to pentarch stele. The phellogen originates in the second or third layer of cortex.

|
Africa, Tropical Asia and Australia. Recorded throughout the warmer parts. In Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, recorded in the drier zones but nowhere abundant. In Kerala, recorded inly in the distrubed forests of drier regions. (ravikumar)

|
Trivita can be easily propagated by seeds or layering. Hot water treatment of the seeds is recommended for better germination.
