DESCRIPTION
Erect, much branched shrubs, 1-5 m high. Leaves fleshy, cuneate-obovate or obovate-oblong, with a narrow cordate or often amplexicaul base, smooth above, cottony below. Flowers lilac, pale rose or purple, rarely light greenish yellow or white, in simple or compound cymose-corymbs.
   
PHARMACOGNOSY
Root : Root is externally whitish grey in colour. Transverse section of mature root shows cork zone composed of thirty to fifty or more rows of polyhedral to nearly cubical thin walled cells, very small sized cubical crystals are found in the inner rows. Phellogen is distinct. Cortex is comparatively narrow of few rows of cubical, rectangular or oblong-thin walled cells, most of which are filled with numerous starch grains. Phloem is a broad zone consisting of number of broad radical bands of thin walled cells traversed by very narrow strips of medullary rays.

Leaf : The tender leaves are covered with ashy grey pubescence. Mature leaves are nearly smooth or even glabrous and pale green. T.S. of leaf shows upper epidermis consisting of elliptical or oval cells, followed by three layers of closely packed palisade cells and spongy parenchyma. Vascular elements are distributed throught the upper spongy parenchymatous region. The vessels show annular and spiral thickening.
   
DISTRIBUTION
This species is probably native to Indian Subcontinent, globally distributed from Africa to Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found growing up to an altitude of 900 metres throughout including the Andamans. It occurs in open habitats.
   
CULTIVATION
It can be easily grown from seeds, and root and shoot cuttings. It grows well in most types of soil, sometimes even where nothing will grow, such as sandy barren grounds, but grows easily on rubbish heaps, waste lands etc.
