| DESCRIPTION |
|
Annual herbs or undershrubs, 1-2 m high. Leaves compound, paripinnate, leaflets 3-pairs, ovate-oblong. Flowers bright yellow, ususally in pairs, axillary. Pods long, slendr, obliquely septate, 15-25 cm long.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : External surface of root is dark brown, inner surface creamy, fracture long. The main root is bent to an angle of 30 degree near the foot region. Young root shows single layered epidermis composed of cubical cells. Epidermal is followed by 3-4 layers of parenchymatous cortex showing distinct endodermis with casparian dots on radial walls. Pericycle is single layered, parenchymatous enclosing a diarch stele. Cork of mature root consists of 4-6 layers of narrow rectangular and tangentially elongated cells. Phelloderm consists of 12 layers of parenchymatous cells and long, moderatley thick fibres.
Stem : The stem is erect, circular, smooth, green when fresh but dark brown when dry, much branched, branches arise at nodes spirally. In transection the outline of young stem is slightly ridged. Cortex shows 6 to 8 layers of isodiammetric parenchymatous cells, some of which contain rosette or small prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate.
Leaf : The leaves are compound, obovate-oblong, glaucous, membranous, glabrous, more or less pubescent, base somewhat oblique, usually rounded, 6-10 prominent veins, divergent venation. Petiole shows single layered epidermis followed by a wide region of cortex consisting of parenchymatous cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is probably native to South America and is globally distributed in the Tropics. Within India, it is found as a weed throughout in the monsoon, ascending up to an altitude of 1550 metres in the Himalayas.

It can easily be propagated by seeds.
