| DESCRIPTION |
|
An aromatic, herbaceous annual, 30-90 cm tall. Leaves ternately decompound, lower ones long petioled and upper ones short petioled. Flowers small, white or pinkish purple in compound terminal umbels.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruit is globose, glabrous, schizopcarp, about 5 mm in diameter, splitting into two hemispherical mericarps. Each mericarp has 5 wavy, rather inconspicuous, primary ridges alternating with 4 more prominent secondary ridges. Seed is convexo-cocave, about tghrice as broad as thick; odour aromatic; taste spicy. Transverse section of fruit shows pericarp with outer epidermis having slightly thickened anticlinal wall; a few stomata; many cells with small prisms of cacium oxalate. Outer layer of mesocarp is parenchymatous with inner cells in wavy longitudinal rows and degenrated vittae as tangentially flattened cavities.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Mediterranean, wild in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia and Greece. Within India, it is cultivated as a subsidiary crop in the black soils of Deccan and South India and in the rich silt loams of North India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Coriander thrives best in black soil and rich silt loam. It is generally grown as a rainfed crop, either pure or mixed with other crops. In some areas it is grown as irrigated crop. The time of seed sowing varies from region to region.
