| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small, spiny, erect, undershrub. More or less glandular; branches slender, terete, triate, glabrous. Leaves opposite, 1-3 foliate; petioles very variable in length, from 3 - 30 mm long, deeply striate, very slender; stipules 2 pairs os sharp slender thorns, sometimes exceeding 12 mm in length; leaflets linear, acute, sessile or with very short petiolules.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem : The wood of the stem is white, very hard and covered with a ragged light brown bark which becomes shiny and mucilaginous when moistened. In transverse section, stem is more or less circular and striate. In less mature stem there is single layer of epidermis with a thick cuticle: unicellular and multicellular hairs are abundant. The multicellular hairs terminate in multicellular glands. The cortex is composed of 7-10 layers of cells. Outer cortical cells contain abundant choloroplasts.
Root : Roots are cylindrical, tough and woody and externally light yellow to light brown in colour. In transverse section the mature root shows cork represented by 4-6 layers of small, narrow, tangentially elongated to rectangular cells. Phelloderm is composed of 6-14 layers of somewhat tangentially elongated and thin walled parenchymatous cells.
Leaf : Leaves are opposite, 1 to 3 foliate; leaflets small, entire, linear or linear oblong, sessile or with very short petioles. Stipules are modified into 2 pairs of sharp slender thorns sometims exceeding 1.5 cm in length. Leaves are without any prominent midrib region projected above the level of lamina.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species has a restricted global distribution occuring in Pakistan and India. Within India, it has been recorded in the upper gangetic plains and Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram). This is synonym of Fagonia arabica L.
