| DESCRIPTION |
|
Prostate, annual or biennial herbs, upto 90 cm in length. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets 5-8 pairs, sunequal, oblong to linear-oblong, mucronate, pubescent on both surfaces. Flowers axillary or leaf opposed, pale yellow to yellow, solitary on peduncles shorter than the leaves.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root occurs in pieces, 7-18 cm long and 0.3-0.7 cm in diameter, cylindrical, fibrous, frequently branched, bearing a number of small rootlets, tough, woody, yellow to ligt brown in colour, surface rough due to presence of small nodule; fracture fibrous; odour aromatic; taste sweetish and astringent. Trasnverse section of primary root shows a layer of epidermis followed by 4-5 layers of thin walled parenchymatous cortex.
Fruit : Fruit is stalked, globose, possessing five woody wedge shaped cocci, covered with to pairs of short spines, one pair larger than the other. Tips os spines almost met in pairs of hort spines, one pair larger than the other. Tips of spines almost meet in pairs together forming pentagonal framework around the fruit. Outer surface of the epicarp is covered by non glandular trichomes.

|
This species is a native to the Mediterranean region. A species of the tropical regions found to be distributed throughout India from sea level to 3500 metres This species is native to the Mediterranen region, globally distributed in the tropics. Within India, it is found throughout in sandy soil.

|
The herb is a common weed, springs up soon after first showers. It prefers medium and sandy soil. The plant can be propagated by seeds. It flowers and fruits almost throughout the year.
