| DESCRIPTION |
|
A scabrid perennial twining herb or climber, usually prostate, or spreading on ground with slender stem and bifid hairy tendrils. Roots deep, branched, stout, dull-yelllowish o rpale brown, smooth, cylindrical.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruit : Greyish-white, off-white or yellowish, pithy fragments upto about 6 * 2 cm; extrenally convex with ridges and flattened areas 5 - 10 mm wide resulting from peeling with a knife; internally irregularly concave and showing numerous ovoid depressions about 100 mm long, leaft by the removal of the seeds.
Root : Root is available in cut pieces of 2 - 7 cm long, 0.2 - 2.5 cm thick, cylindrical, slightly twisted; dull yellow; longitudinal fissures present; fracture short; taste intensively bitter. In transverse section mature root shows wavy outline consisting of 6 - 10 layers of rectangular, thick walled, tangentially elongated cork cells, a few filled with dark brown contents. Secondary cortex consits of 10 - 15 layers of elliptical, tangentially elongated, thin walled, parenchymatous cells.
Leaf : Leaves are very variable, 3.6 - 6.3 * 2.5 - 5.0 cm, pinnately lobed in outline, generally 3 - lobed, sometimes 3 - 7 lobed, middle lobe largest, each lobe deeply pinnatifid; petiole 1.3 - 2.5 cm long, entire leaf densely hirsute; taste very bitter.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed from Africa, Mediterranean, except Spain, to Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found wild in the warm, arid and sandy parts throughout, up to an altitude of 1500 metres
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
It grows best in bright light and annual rainfall of 150-300 mm. Fully developed yellow ripe fruits re vailable for sowing by November onwards.
