| DESCRIPTION |
|
An evergreen moderate sized aromatic tree with greyish black bark having lenticular spots on the outside and red juice on the inner side. Leaves elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, shiny above, dull beneath. Flowers creamy yellow, fragrant, in umbellate cymes, staminal column of female flowers stalked.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Seed is ellipsoid, 20-30 mm long and about 20 mm broad, externally greenish-brown. A small light coloured area at one end indicating the position of the radicle and a groove running along the line of raphe to the darker chalaza at the opposite end present. Endosperm is greyish brown. Embryo is located in an irregular cavity, small, with two widely spreading crumpled cotyledons and a small radicle. Odour is strong and aromatic; taste pungent and aromatic. Transverse section of endosperm shows peripheral perisperm of several layers of strongly flattened polyhedral cells with brown contents, or containing prismatic crystals; inner layer of perisperm is composed of thin-walled parenchyma, infolding into the tissue of the endosperm to form the ruminationscontaining numerous, very large oil cells with brown cell walls.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
It is endemic to the Western Ghats of Karnataka and Kerala. This species is a native of Eastern Moluccas, now cultivated in many tropical countries of both hemispheres. In India, it is cultivated in Assam, West Bengal and in South India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Nutmeg requires hot and moist climate with 150 to 300 cm rainfall per annum. It grows best at low elevations in alluvium formed of deep friable loam with good drainage. The plant is propagated by seeds. Fresh seeds are collected from mature fruits, dried for a day and sown directly on the site or in prepared nursery beds
