| DESCRIPTION |
|
Much branched climbing shrub, rooting at the nodes. Leaves simple, alternate, cordate, briadly ovate, 5-9 nerved, dark green. Flowers minute, in spikes of variable lebgth.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruit : Fresh fruit is ovoid or globose, 4-6 mm in diameter, orange-red to reddish in colour when fully mature. Dried ripe fruits are grayish black with wrinkled surface. A transverse section of pericarp shows ingle layered epidermis followed by subepidermal layers of stone cells composed of more than one row of thick walled cells possessing uniformly thickened pitted walls. Inner to this, is a parenchymatous region consisting of thin walled cells containing small, irregular masses or lumps of starch grains, which are small and mostly spheroidal.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is believed to be a native of the hills of South-Western India. It is extensively cultivated in the hot and moist parts of India, SriLanka and several tropical countries. Its presence in the wild is currently seen in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This species is probably native to South West India, globally distributed in India and Sri Lanka. It is cultivated in the hot and moist regions of tropical countries. Within India, it is found in the Peninsular India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
In India pepper is cultivated mostly as a mixed crop in homestead garden. It is grown mainly in Kerala, Tamilnadu and Karnataka and to very small extent in Assam upto an altitude of 1500 m. Pepper requires warm and humid climate with annual rainfall over 200 cm.
