| DESCRIPTION |
|
Pocumbent or trailing herb or under shrub with many btranches clothed with 10-15 mm long prickles. Leaves ovate or elliptic, sinuate or sub-pinnatifid, prickly. Flowers blue or violet-purple, in lateral cymes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root is 10 to 45 cm long and a few mm to 2 cm in diameter, almost cylindrical and tapering, outer surface showing a number of fine longitudinal and a few transverse wrinkles with occassional scars or a few lenticels and small rootlets; fracture short; taste bitter. Transverse section of root is differentiated into thin bark and central woody cylinder. Bark is composed of tangentially elongated, thick and wavy walled collenchyma cells, a few cells filled with microcrystals.
Stem : Stem is prickly, covered with numerous hair when young, mature ones glabrous, furrowed, surface yellowish green; fracture short to slightly fibrous. Transverse section of mature stem shows single layered cuticularised epidermis, wide zone of thick and folded walled collenchyma,2-3 layers of discontinuous phloem fibres, thin band of extra- and intra-xylary phloem, xylem vessels with spiral and annular thickenings and pitted, 1-3 seriate pitted ray cells and xylem fibres.
Leaf : Leaf is simple, petiolate, elliptic, subacute, subpinnatifid, stellately hairy on both the surfaces, with long yellow, sharp prickles on midrib and nerves. Transverse section of leaf through midrib shows single layered heavily thickened cuticularised upper and lower epidermis provided with 1 to many celled covering trichomes and glandular trichomes, multicellular spine and stellate hairs, 4-6 layers of chlorenchyma.
Flower : Flowers are extra-axillary, peduncles and pedicels short, surved, stellately hairy, purple, 3-4 cm in diameter; sepals 5, green, united at the base, midrib and veins having prickles and hairs; petals 5, purple, united at base to form short tube, apex acute, margin wavy, 1.5 to 2 cm in length; stamens 5, free, attached to corolla tube by short basifixed filament, anthers bilobed; carpels 2, united, style short, stigma ovoid.
Fruit : Fruit is a berry, globose, 13-20 mm in diameter with white and green markings on the fruit wall, calyx persistent with prickles and hairs. Seeds are numerous, embedded in fleshy, mucilaginous mass, flattened, round with a curved end, measuring 2-3 mm in diameter, glabrous. Transverse section shows single layered thick walled cuticularized epidermis, single layered thick walled crystal layer with polygonal solitary crystals.
