| DESCRIPTION |
|
Perennial herb 15-30 cm high, with bulbuous solid corms 3-5 cm in iam.; leaves radicle, long, linear channelled surrounded by sheath; flowers terminal, solitary or 2-3 clustered enclosed in spathe, mauve or reddish-purple 2.5 cm across, funnel shaped, talkless, appearing in autumn with leaves.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stigma : Kumkum consist of loosely matted mass mostly of intact stigmas attached to the apex of of the style or separated stigmas, about 25 mm in length having a shape o a long hollow tube narrowed at the base where it joints the style, broadening towards the upper extremities, the lips or margin of the stigma irregularly dentate or fimbriate and papillose; texture quite soft and brittle; colour dark red to pale reddish-brown; odour strong characteristically aromatic; taste slightly bitter. The attached styles are about 10 mm long, more or less cylindrical yelowish-brown to yellowish-orange in colour

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to South Europe and is cultivated in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Persia, India and China. Cultivation in India is mostly confined to the table-land of Pampur (1600 metres above sea level) in Kashmir and Kishtwar in Jammu.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Saffron grows well in cool areas with sun shin between altitudes ranging from 1500 to 2200 m. It grow well on different types of soil ranging from sandy to sandy loam and also dry siliceous, argillaceous, ferruginous, chalky soils.
