| DESCRIPTION |
|
A pyramicidal or conical evergreen tree upto 12 m high. Leaves simple, lanceolate, in pairs, 7-13 cm in length and 2-4 cm in breadth, gland dotted, fragrant.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Flower bud is 10-17.5 mm long, dark brown or dusty red in colour, consisting of a sub-cylindrical, slightly flattended, four sided hypanthium, readily exuding oil when presed, hypanthium containing in its upper portion a two celled inferior ovary with numerous ovules attached to axile placents, surrounded by four thick, divergent sepals and covered by unopened corlla consisting of four membranous imbricate petals, frequently detached, enclosing numerous incurved stamens and one erect-style.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Malay Archipelago especially Moluccas, cultivated in many Asian islands. Within India, it is cultivated mainly in Kerala (Kottarakara, Chengannur, valleys of Pamban and Manimala rivers, and gardens of Pidavoor and Kottayam areas) and Tamil Nadu (the Nilgiris, Courtallam and Kanniyakumari).

| CULTIVATION |
|
In India it is mostly grown in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, from sea level to an altitude of 900 m. It requires warm, humid climat with 150 to 300 cm rainfall.
