| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small, evergreen tree, upto 6 m tall; bark dark grey, rough. Leaves elliptic-oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, 9-18 * 3-5 cm, serrulate or obscurely crenate, rarely entire, glabrous and dark green above, pubescent beneath. Flowers white, fading yellow, in simple axillary racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Dried stem bark is generally channeled or curved, upto 1 cm thick, outer surface uneven and rough due to fissures and cracks, grayish-brown to grey externally, pale to whitish-brown internally; fracture short and granular in cortical region and somewhat fibrous in inner region; taste astringent and slightly bitter. Transverse section shows a wide cork of thin-walled, rectangular cells and 1-3 layered cork cambium. Secondary cortex consists of thin-walled, oval and tangentially elongated parenchymatous cells towards outer side and rounded cells towards inner side.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malesian region. In India it is distributed in the Western Peninsula region, North Eastern India and Sub-Himalayan tracts. This species is distriubted in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found in North and East India and in the Western Peninsula.
