| DESCRIPTION |
|
A perennial climbing herb; roots long, cylindric, with a thin red bark; stems very long, rough, grooved; branches scandent, quadrangular, often prickly on angles.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root : Root is long, cylindric, fexuose, smooth and reddish. In transverse section, the root is circular in outline. Outer 5-7 layers of cells form the cork tissue, occasionally containing tannin. Secondary cortical cells are thin walled and polygonal in shape. Many of these cells contain tannin. Phloem cells are thin walled, some of themn contain tannin.
Stolon : Stolon is reddiah brown and cylindrical with nodes and internodes. In cross section, it is circular in outline. Cork consists of 6-8 layers of tangentially elongated thick walled cells. Some of the cells in inner layer cells are prosenchymatous, some of which contain tannin
Stem : Stem is slender, almost cylindrical, slightly flattened, wiry, upto 0.5 cm thick, brown to purple coloured; surface scabrous, stiff and grooved with longitudinal cracks, nodes distinct, prickles present in the immature stem; fracture short. Transverse section of mature stem shows exfoliating cork, ruptured at places, forming dome-shaped structure, consisting of 3-12 or more radially arranged cells; secondary cortex 3-5 layered consisting of tangentially elongated, thin-walled cells, some of which contain acicular crystals of calcium oxalate.
