| DESCRIPTION |
|
A scapigerous herb with underground bulb, bulbs 2-4 cm in diameter with many fleshy, creamy, ovoid bulblets or cloves having peculiar alliaceous pungent odour; bulbs covered by outer white thin scales.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Bulb : Bulbs 4-6 cm in diameter consisting of 8-20 cloves, surrounded by 3-5 whitish papery membranous scales attached to a short, disc-like woody stem having numerous, wiry rootlets on the underside. Each clove is ovoid, tapering at upper end with dorsal convex surface, 2-3 mm long, 0.5-0.8 cm wide, each surrounded by two very thin papery whitish and brittle scales having 2-3 yellowish-green folded leaves within two white fleshy, modified leaf bases or scales. Odour peculiarly pungent and disaggreable, taste acrid gives warmth to tongue.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to Central Asia, and spread to the Mediterranean region, China and western hemisphere. It is cultivated throughout India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Garlic is grown as a commercial crop in many parts of the country. It can best be grown in mild climates without extreme heat or cold upto an altitude of 600 to 900 m. It requires rich well drained clay loam for good growth. Very heavy soils are not suitable.
