| DESCRIPTION |
|
A slender, laticiferous, twining, sometimes prostate or semi-erect shrub. Leaves opposite, shortly petioled, very varibale, elliptic-oblong to linear-lanceolate, pale beneath and very frequently with a whole streak above.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Roots occur in pieces, about 30 cm long and 3 - 8 mm in diameter, cylindrical, thick, hard, somewhat tortuous, scarcely branched, possessing few thick rootlets and secondary roots; external appearance dark brown, sometimes with violet-grey tinge; centre yellow, woody, surrounded by a mealy white cortical layer; bark brownish, corky, marked with transverse cracks and longitudinal fissures and easily detachable from the hard central core; odour, characteristic; taste sweetish, slightly acrid and aromatic.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in India, SriLanka, South East Asia and Malesia. In India, it is found in North India, Sikkim and Peninsular India. This speices is globally distributed in Indo-Malesia. Within India, it is found in moist deciduous forests, scrub jungles, hedges and degraded sites from Upper Gangetic plains of North India to Assam and Peninsular India.

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plant is not under commercial cultivation, it grows wild all over the country. Agricultural methods and practices, if developed and adopted, will certainly help in improving the availablity of genuine drug.
