| DESCRIPTION |
|
A large coniferous evergreen tree with spreading crown; bark dark grey or reddish, deeply fissured and rough, branches whorled. Leaves 20-30 cm long, acicular, bright green, triquetrous, in clusters of 3.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Heartwood : The heartwood is yellowish brown, it is available in the market as chips of yellowish-brown colour, when fresh and becoming brwon on exposure; fractures are short, resin canal strands and growth rings seen on fractured surface; odour resinous and aromatic. Wood is non-porous, showing alternating bands of autumn wood and spring wood. Tracheids of spring wood are large, polygonal in shape and thinner than autumn tracheids.
Root : Root pieces are hard, woody, cylindrical, reddish-brown, surface rough due to longitudinal and transverse striations; fracture hard. Mature root shows 10-15 layered cork of thin-walled, tabgentially elongated cells filled with tannin; secondary cortex consisting of a wide zone of thin-walled, rectangular to polygonal cells mostly filled with starch garins and embedded with resin canals.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed in Hindukush himalayan range across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan usually between an altitude range 1000-2000 metres, exceptionally between 500-2700 metres Within India, it has been recorded in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Tamil Nadu. It is also planted in garden as an ornament.

|
The plant require sufficeint light and well drained porous soil. Natural regenration take splace through seeds. Under ordinary forest conditions trees less than 30 years old seldom bear cones.
