| DESCRIPTION |
|
A stout, glabrous, aromatic herb, 60-100 cm high; stem striate, branched. Leaves alternate, 5-15 cm long; triangular-ovate, much dissected into linear segments, petiole 10-13 cm, broadly shetahing at the base.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Fruit : Usually entire cremocarp with pedicel attached; mericarps upto 10 mm long and 4 mm broad, five sided, with wide commissural surface, tapering slightly towards base and apex, crowned with a conical stylopod, glabrous, greenish o yellowish-brown or greenish with five prominent primary ridges; endosperm orthospermous. Odour characteristic; taste sweet and aromatic. Transverse section of fruit shows five angled pericarp with outer epidermis of quadrangular to polygonal cells with smooth cuticle and a few stomata.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is native to southern Europe and Asia, cultivated widely throughout the temperate and sub-tropical regions of the world for its aromatic fruits. Within India, it is cultivated throughout India upto an altitude of 1800 metres It is sometimes found as an escape from cultivation.

| CULTIVATION |
|
It grows on all types of soil, but thrives best in rich, well-drained loam or black sandy soil with sufficient time. The soil rich in organic matter gives maximum hieght and oil yield.
