| DESCRIPTION |
|
Nearly erect under shrubs. Stems pubescent. Leaves simple, ovate or oblong-ovate, entire, obtuse or acute. Flowers pink, hardly 6 mm long, in racemes, upto 30 cm long.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Commercially, the root is found in cut pieces, mixed with short stems. The root system consists of poorly developed tap root, which is smooth externally. It bears a number of transverse lenticels and nodules. The bark is thin, loosely adhering to the wood in the centre. The primary structure of the root is tri to tetrarch. The primary phloem shows the formation of phloem fibres; phellogen formation takes place in the pericycle. The mature root consists of 3-7 layers of tangentially elongated cork cells, and a wide zone of secondary phloem encircling the xylem showing one or rarely two growth rings.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Global distribution of the species is recorded from the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia. It is a shrub found commonly in deciduous forests and teak plantations as an under growth. This species is globally distributed from Africa to Australia, introduced and naturalised in the West Indies. Within India, it is found throughout in forests and open habitats upto an altitude of 1600 metres in the Himalayas, except in the drier regions.

|
It is propagated by seeds and prefers light soil. Seed dormancy may be overcome by presowing treatment of seeds with chemicals for 15 minutes.
