| DESCRIPTION |
|
Scandant, much branched spinous undershrub with tuberous, short root stock bearing numerous fusiform tuberous roots, 30-100 cm long and 1-2 cm thick. Leaves reduced to minute chaffy scales and spines.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Unpeeled roots are cream to light brown in colour and show a number of scars and protuberances of lateral rootlets besides numerous minute wrinkles on the external surface. It possesses usual piliferous layer but this layer is very often ruptured and replaced by a dark pigmented tissue of broken down cells. When complete, the piliferous layer is composed of small thin walled square or rectangular cells, many of which are modified into root hairs. Beneath the piliferous layer is a 7 - 10 layered zone of outer cortex which is composed of compactly arranged thick walled suberized cells with very irregular transverse outlines and with distinct somewhat lignified mid-lamellae.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This speices is globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it is found growing wild in tropical and sub-tropical parts of India including the Andamans; and ascending in the Himalayas up to an altitude of 1500 metres
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
The plants can be successfully grown in variety of soil, but it prefers sandy well drained soil. The can be propagated by seeds and divisions of rhizomatous disc.
