| DESCRIPTION |
|
A perennial rhizomatous herb, upto 1 m tall with elongate stem. Rhizomes are thick, upto 7.5 cm in diametr, aromatic, knotty, with thick fibrous roots. Leaves upto 30 cm or more, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, glabrous, acuminate, with long clasping sheaths.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Rhizomes are 15-20 cm long, 2.0-2.5 cm in diameter, externally yellowish-brown, but change to dark brown on storage, drug available in piecesof 2.5 cm in diameter, edge of each piece is covered by a rough reddish-brown layer marked with numerous scars and circular rings; rudiments of root-lets visible; odour is camphoraceous and taste bitter. Transverse section of rhizome shows an outermost thick layer of suberized, dark brown cells of outer cork consisting of 10-15 or more layers of irregular parenchymatous cells; inner cork consisting of a few layered light brown, rectangular, radially arranged cells folowed by a wide zone of cortex.
