| DESCRIPTION |
|
A small to medium sized, deciduous tree, upto 12 m high. Leaves large, bipinnate or tripinnate; leaflets ovate or elliptic. Flowers purple, fleshy, foetid, in large erect racemes.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Root Bark : The outer surface of mature root bark is rough , greyish to buff brown coloured with cracks and fissures. Lenticels, circular, ,circular or vertically elongated, are present on the external surface. Fracture is short but slightly fibrous inside. A cut portion of fresh bark, after exposure to air, becomes greenish yellow. The surface skin is very thin, soft, easily scrapable. The inner bark is golden yellow, fibrous.
Stem Bark : Pieces are flat or slightly curved, 8-12 mm thick. External surface is greyish yellow with patches of brown coloured tissue and bears trasnversely elongated or circular lenticels. The outer surface is rough while inner surface is smooth and golden yellow in colour. Fracture is short but fibrous towards inner side. Taste is slightly mucilaginous and sweetish. The texture is leathery and tough.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malesian region and SriLanka. The species is distributed throughout India, growing upto an altitude of 1200 metres
|

| CULTIVATION |
|
The tree repreoduces naturally be seeds which germinate in the beginning of the rainy season. Moderate shade is necessary in the early stages. Artficial reproduction may be done by sowing the seeds in the nursery during march-april and trabsplanting the seedlings in the first or second rainy season.
