| DESCRIPTION |
|
A tree upto 18 m high. Leaves ovate, ovate-lanceolate or elliptic, subacute, entire, petiolate. Figs sub-globose or pyriform, red when ripe, borne in large clusters, on short, leafless branches emerging from the trunk and the amin branches.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The bark is grey and on drying, the pieces become curved, 6-18 mm thick. It has an indistinct odour and astringent taste. The outer surface of the bark has easily removable translucent flakes of whitish tissue, greyish to rusty brown, uniformly hard and non-brittle. Microscopically the cork is made up of polygonal or rectangular cells. The phellogen is made up of 1-2 layers of thin walled cells. Phelloderm is well marked compact tissue consisting of mainly parenchymatous cells with isolated or small groups of sclereids, particularly in inner region.
