| DESCRIPTION |
|
A lrage, spreading tree producing numerous aerial roots which enter the ground and form trunks. Leaves leathery, ovate, obtuse, entire, petiolate, thick.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
Stem Bark : Mature stem bark is grey in colour with thin, closely adhered ashy white, light bluish green or grey patches. The bark is flat or slightly curved, thickness varies with age of tree. Externally it is rough due to presence of horizontal furrows and lenticels, mostly circular and prominent. Fracture is short in outer two thirds of bark while inner portion shows a fibrous fracture. Taste is astringent. Cambium is composed of a few layers of small, rectangular, thin walled cells.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
Globally the species occurs in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Now it is widely planted as an avenue tree, in many regions. Within India, it occurs throughout upto 1300 m altitude and is planted extensively. This species is globally distributed trhoughout the moist and dry deciduous forest regions and plains of South Asia upto an altitude of about 1200 metres Within India, it is found from the sub-Himalayan hills in the north to Peninsular India. It is widely planted throughout.
