| DESCRIPTION |
|
It is a hardy herb or undreshrub attaining a height upto 2 m; leaves multifoliate, imparipinnate; flowers in axillary spikes, papilionaceous, lavender to violet in color; pods compressed, containing reinform seeds.

| PHARMACOGNOSY |
|
The drug sold in market in the name of liquorice consists of stolon and root of glycyrrhiza glabra. Stolon is yellowish brown or dark brown, longitudinally wrinkled externally; cut surface shows a cambium ring and a small central pith; root is similar but without a pith. Fracture is coarsely fibrous in bark and splintery in wood. Odour is faint and characetrisic; taste sweetish. In T.S., the stolon shows outer cork of tabular cells, outer layers with reddish brown, amorphous contents. Cells of secondary cortex contain isolated prisms of calcium oxalate. Phgloem fibres are in radially arranged groups of 10-15 surrounded by sheath of parenchyma cells usually containing prisms of calcium oxalate.

| DISTRIBUTION |
|
This species is globally distributed from Mediterranean to Central Asia. It is said to be cultivated in Russia, Spain and Middle East Region. The drug is imported into India on a considerable scale from Asia Minor, Iraq, Persia and other Central Asian countries.

| CULTIVATION |
|
Liquorice can be cultivated in warmer climatic conditions in India which provide longer growing season, but followed by distinct, long winter season to facilitate translocation of assimilates to rhizome / roots.
