Dear friends, in our classics there are many refrences where ayurvedic contraceptives are mentioned, but those all are not practised, once i got to chance to discuss with Dr.P.V.Tiwari who did research over ayurvedic contraceptives, but she also told that there is no ayurvedic contraceptive which can be practiced. If any one of u have good experience of any ayurvedic contraceptive please let we also know ?

**drug AC-4 prepared by Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha has been studied for its effectiveness as an oral contraceptive on 834 subjects from May,1978 to 31st June, 1987. ..Formula .ASHOKA .VIDANGA .LAKSHA .KRAMUK Dose :2 Tablets of 500 gms each. *Since it is non hormonal it does not affect the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and as well as the other adverse side effects. e.g.abnormal increase in weight, thromboembolic episodes or hepatic damage. .There is also no effect on lactation.Hence in lactating women it can be a good alternative. .It is cheap, indigenous, well tolerated. No other side effects like intermittent or intermenstrual spotting or bleeding. ** Mechanism of action of the drug 1.Vidanga:It is luteolytic, anti-oestrogenic there by interferes in the process of implantation of blastocyst. 2.Ashoka:Contains Pure phenolic glycoside- P2.It is a very strong oxytocic.10 mcg of glycoside P2 is equipotent to 0.0001 Units of oxytocin or 5 mcg of Ergometrine. 3.Laksha:Experimental studies have shown that it reduces alkaline phosphatase, sugar level and uterine weights. It causes changes in endometrial fluid milleu which are not conducive for implementation of blastocyst. 4.Kramuk:Probably high Cu+2 content may play role in anti implantation process. $$other examples found: **Take fresh castor seeds, break them, and you can find a white seed inside. There are certain contraceptives describe in our texts at different places which are well explained by dr. Sood. Yr question is half answered by the experts. I never experienced any ayurvedic physician using these methods. Even Pipplyadi yog is not in practice. Only Ayurvedic method in practice is Sanyam, Brahmcharya and Varnashram.
